What is Atomic Racers?
We are a brand new radio controlled car racing club – racing micro scale cars on our professional indoor track, which has a fully digital race timing system.
At launch, we are focussing on racing Kyosho Mini-Z rear wheel drive RC cars. We hope, in the future, to expand into other mini and micro scale classes.
The club is open to all ages and skill levels from complete beginners to seasoned racers.
Where and when is it?
Our indoor race events take place on selected dates at Stannington Village Hall, Northumberland, NE61 6EL.
We launch our first event on Sunday 2nd March 2025. Check out our events page for all our future race dates.
Due to bookings that were already made at the venue, our timings and race days do vary week by week.
How do I get involved?
To get started you need a Kyosho Mini-Z 1/28 scale RC car. These can be purchased as ready-to-race setups for around £250. Contact us if you need further advice of which model to purchase as it is important that you have the right one.
We also offer a limited number of Mini-Zs to hire at each race event – perfect for those that wish to try it out before committing.

FAQs
– Kyosho Mini-Z RWD 1/28th scale car
– AAA rechargeable batteries
– I-Lap transponder (supplied by the club)
This setup will get you on the race track with very little effort. If you want to be a little more competitive you can look into changing your tyres and doing some minor modifications around suspension setups. There are many sources of information about modifying a Mini-Z on the internet.
To have a race ready setup you will need to spend around £260 in total. The car itself can be purchased for around £200 and you should budget around £60 for additional things like rechargeable batteries, tyres and a transponder.
A transponder is a small electronic device that connects to your Mini-Zs power supply. This emits a signal that is picked up on our track’s timing system and allows for your laps and times to be counted very accurately.
Each transponder has a unique code which is assigned to you, which means that each driver must have their own transponder.
The transponder does not require any specialist installation and should be easy for most people to fit. There are YouTube tutorials available.
At our track we use the I-Lap timing system, which is only compatible with an I-Lap transponder.
These can be purchased directly from the club for £40 – which are sold at cost price.
You can also purchase them directly from rclapcounter.com
You will need a rear wheel drive Kyosho Mini-Z to race competitively at our club. The best model to get would be any with that has ‘(W-MM/KT531P)’ as part of its product code.
You can race any variant of the rear wheel drive Kyosho Mini-z in our events, including the newly released MR04 variant.
The MR04 is Kyosho’s latest variant of their micro racer, which has various upgrades over the MR03 variant. Either model is fine to race and both will be equally as competitive to each other for most racers.
Mini-Zs can be purchased from countless places online.
I would recommend buying from a reputable UK hobby shop such as Wheelspin Models or Modelsport UK.
No – you do not need any experience to come and enjoy racing at our club.
We welcome people of all skills levels and experience and we’ll do our best to help you learn all about the sport.
Yes – we have a limited number of hire cars (5) that anyone can come along and use at a race event to see if they like it.
Race events will last for a minimum of 2 hours, however, if there are high numbers of racers an event could go on beyond this.
Ideally you will have a minimum of 20 AAA rechargeable batteries. This is to allow for a fresh set of batteries between each heat/main race – and 1 set for your transmitter.
Make sure they’re all fully charged before race day as you may not have time to recharge them fully between heats.
The short answer is yes.
Please be sure to check our Super Stock race class specifications to ensure that any modification you make stays legal and keeps racing fair.
Common modifications that are allowed are the kingpin flip, changing tyres, t-plates.
If you’re unsure if a modification is allowed please check with us before doing so.
Whilst we will never turn anyone away – if you intend to race we encourage racers to book on to an event in advance. If you are a new racer you must also submit your details in advance. This is to ensure that the race event runs on time.
Yes – anyone is welcome to come along and watch a race event.
No – all events are run on a pay-as-you-race basis.
You can attend as little or as many race events as you like. If you’re invested in our seasonal race series and overall racer championship standings then it will of course be beneficial to attend as many race events as possible as you’ll amass more points.
Points are awarded at each race event for a racer’s finishing position in their ‘main’.
The racer who finishes 1st in the ‘A main’ will awarded 100 points and subsequently each finishing position behind that are awarded 1 less point than the position above them, as shown in an example below:
A Main:
1st – 100 points
2nd – 99 points
3rd – 98 points
4th – 97 points
5th – 96 points
B Main:
1st – 95 points
2nd – 94 points
3rd – 93 points
4th – 92 points
5th – 91 points
